Pal Charles Benko was born at Amiens in northern France on July 15, when his Hungarian parents were traveling on vacation. He grew up in Budapest, Hungary. His family is related to the Arkosi Benko family. Pal Benko learned chess from his father in , at the age of 9, taught by his father, an engineer and artist who loved to travel.
